You Can Make Your Own Robots

What kid doesn’t dream of having their own personal robot?  I’m not talking about some little plastic toy robot that blinks and buzzes (those can be fun too), but a real robot that can make decisions, help you do things, and even just hang out with you.  Robots aren’t always the best of company, but they’re cool enough that you won’t mind.

Well of course the easy way to get a robot is to go and buy one that’s already made, but that costs a lot of money, and it’s not likely that such a robot would be built exactly to your specifications of the ideal robot.  The more complicated, but less expensive and more fun way, is to build your own robot.

You may be thinking “I’m just a kid, how can I make a robot?!”  And that is where I think you’re going to be amazed, because it’s actually very possible for you to make a robot all by yourself.  You might have to save up a bit of money to get started, but robots don’t even have to be built all at once.  They’re very patient, you can add bits to them as you go, and they’ll never complain unless you’ve programmed them to.

What’s programming?  That’s how you help your robot understand what you want it to do.  You can create the robot’s whole personality and teach it everything it needs to know, just by programming it.  Kids can learn about programming at Junior Coders. That’s the first and most essential skill you will need to master.

Then there’s a little bit of electronics you need to do, but nowadays it’s much easier than it used to be.  Now we have cool technology like Arduino® and Raspberry Pi®, so putting together the components and setting up the software to control them is so easy a kid could do it.

All the other parts, like tracks, and servos, and that kind of thing are easily available from hobby shops and electronics stores. If you’re inventive enough you can even recycle parts designed for other things (like windshield wiper motors).  So if you like the idea of making your own personal robot, why not give it a try?
